Four of us met on sunday morning at 9.00am at our spot north of the city. The day was a wee bit cool but sunny and still...magic riding weather!..We were meeting another 4 bikes up the track a wee bit so off we went.
Our plan was to leave Christchurch and head north thru the Lewis pass to Springs Junction, down thru the Rahu saddle to Hokitika...have a break, something to eat and drink then head south to Stillwater, thru to Moana for fuel again...passed Lake Brunner and out to Jacksons, left to Arthurs Pass and back to Christchurch, a ride of some 540 kms.
The day was magic and when we met our friends we set off single file on our ride...things were going nicely with a long section of winding corners heading up hill thru the Lewis Pass. I was the second bike behind my good friend on his Storm. WE had just gone down a fast dipper and as we came to the top the road headed right. (For you American boys, we ride on the left here) As we rounded the corner I saw that my m8 was going wide...out to the edge and he started a few Evil Kneivel tricks trying to keep her on the hard stuff when suddenly he was in the grass verge doing around 80 kms...the bike travelled about 20 ft wobbling when it hit a hole...the footbrake collected a lump of dirt and the whole deal catapulted over firing my m8 over the bars and into the ground!..The bike smashed a couple of fence posts and stopped!.....FUCK!!!...I stopped and parked, the others arrived and the usual things unfolded!...luckily My friend had a twisted ankle, bruises galore and torn leathers...no blood..We collected bits and checked the damage, tank is stuffed with many dents and compressed a bit, both short tors dented, rear guard dented and taillight torn away, handle bars bent down into the tank and headlights on the piss. Nothing that cant be fixed anyway. To his credit, he mounted up, straightened a few things and away we went to complete our ride.
Today, he is resting...and thinking no doubt...We are all happy he is ok...he thinks he stepped off a stone with his front wheel which pushed him out wider than his line...Now the repairs start!

More than enough hazards out there, hard to understand the inexplicable sometimes. Sorry to hear this, will no doubt be an expensive fix.
I watched a friend go down in a similar situation once. Midday, returning from a short ride, making a lazy turn across 3 lanes of highway to a narrow city street, no traffic, good weather, no hazards or excuse, he just went wide until a curb took him down. Bent rim, forks, tank, bars, banged up and bruised for no apparent reason. He and his Norton were back up in no time tho, better than ever.

I think target fixation may have been the culprit. survival reflexes are hard to fight. that's usually the problem with these types of wrecks. all in the eyes.
